Bring Back Desktop Publishing

Back in the 1980’s when personal computers began their slow takeover of the world, the idea of printing your publications was pretty foreign to most people. That’s why the concept of desktop publishing was so popular. Businesses that had relied on expensive graphic artists and printers could suddenly do their own sales booklet printing and design.

It seems quaint today, but thirty years ago, this represented a seismic shift in the business landscape. But desktop publishing wasn’t just about making your own materials easy, it was also a move towards making your materials look great.

Flash forward to today and you’ll see first graders printing out their books for school projects. And while items we design and print ourselves are convenient and neat, are they really designed well?

Too many people in the business world have forgotten what a big deal desktop publishing really is. That’s why they rely on tired templates for everything from annual reports to business card printing. But these designs are tired and show that you haven’t taken the time to really do something special.

Designing sales publications that pop is a lot easier than you might think. If people could do it in the 1980’s, you can definitely do it today.
